Evolution of Our Materials: A Journey of Innovation
Imagine the 1950s: a time when function often preceded form. In the textile world, this meant the rise of plastic coatings, or as they were commonly known, oil cloth. These materials were the workhorses of their day, offering unparalleled durability and waterproofing. However, their lifespan wasn't without its challenges; sunlight could fade their colors, and time could leave them stiff and fragile.
The swinging sixties ushered in an era of scientific discovery, and our story took an exciting turn. New polymers and cutting-edge machinery paved the way for sophisticated materials like faux leather and leatherette. Suddenly, automotive interiors were transformed, with these innovative surfaces becoming the norm for door panels and comfortable seating.
Yet, the quest for improvement continued. Visionary advancements led to a groundbreaking technique: blowing polymer coatings in ovens. This ingenious process created the expanded or foam vinyl we utilize today: a material that boasts an exceptional softness, often compared to the luxurious feel of the finest leather.
